Making the Business Case for Talent Management and Learning Systems

Dr. Katherine Jones has been working with the Vital Analysis team here for the last 18 mos. or so. If you don’t know her, she’s quite an expert on HR and ERP technologies. Recently, she penned a research report on building a great talent management business case.  Katherine’s posted this announcement on the Vital Analysis website and has graciously offered to make it available to others. Simply complete the request form on this website or send us an email at contact@vitalanalysis.com .

Here is a small quote from this report:

“The most successful business cases are tight in their focus; rather than promising to do everything that may relate to corporate goals at a specific time, narrowing the intent of the technology to the most important and attainable objectives. Map key business needs to learning and talent improvement requirements, then focus on the results expected: for example, improved customer engagement through better trained sales and service personnel, or retaining skilled workers with hard-to-get skills through a better rewards system. “

Silk Road 2008 report cover

Still a Strong Trajectory, Offering and Following

Our report on SilkRoad’s Red Carpet offering last year was one of the most requested reports we produced. Because of that market interest we sought out the SilkRoad executives at this year’s HR Technology show in Chicago to get a more detailed briefing on their products and their vision of the HR space. SilkRoad investor Flip Filipowski sat in on much of that conversation.

In short, we continue to be impressed with the company’s marketing efforts, the enthusiasm they project in the space, the additions to the product line and more.

The new report is much longer and covers more than just the RedCarpet product. OpenHire, WingSpan, GreenLight and Eprise are also covered in this new document.

This report costs $395 for a single-user copy. It will be available to requestors for no charge until December 15, 2008. To receive a copy, please submit a request through our web site.

Avilar: Will New Leadership Translate Into Market Leadership?

We recently spoke with the leadership of Avilar, a learning and talent management solutions firm. That briefing resulted in this 6 page research note.  Here is an excerpt from the Overview section of the report:

We recently received a short briefing from Avilar’s new CEO, Tom Grobicki. Tom is not new to Avilar (he was one of the founders) but we wanted to hear his take on the company, its product line and its prospects.

Avilar is a competency management and LMS (learning management system) provider.

The company believes that the continuing ‘graying’ or outright retirement of many talented workers will make talent management a critical business competency that many mid-large firms have not adequately addressed.”

This report is available for download for $395/single use copy. Reports can be ordered via our online request form or via email at contact@vitalanalysis.com .

New Research Report

Workstream had a big product launch of its talent management solution at the Fall 2007 HR Technology show in Chicago. We developed a short research report covering the highlights of this announcement along with our prognosis for the product. Here’s a blurb from the Company/Product Highlights section of the report:

The new software has these attributes:

  • 500 man-years of development were invested in the new product line
  • average time to deploy the solution is down to 1-12 weeks per customer

  • 43 currencies supported

  • 10 languages supported

  • Web 2.0 architecture

Several beta and prospective beta customers were on hand for the announcement. These included United Way, GlaxoSmithKline and others. Also on hand was a representative from ExcellerateHRO. ExcellerateHRO is a joint venture of EDS and Towers Perrin. Talent Center is being used in their client HR BPO solution set. A representative of ExcellerateHRO was generally bullish on the product.”

New Report Available: Talent Management with Intellectual Property

We recently met with Michael George of Vurv at the Fall 2007 HR Technology show in Chicago. Vurv made a big splash with their talent management solutions. Vital Analysis prepared a short research report based on the new announcements. Herewith is a brief excerpt from the Vurv Product Details section of the report:

The new Vurv products show very well. The user interface is crisp and intuitive. But the bigger story may be in the inclusion of a significant amount of intellectual property within the product. For example, the performance management software comes complete with detailed knowledge of some 1750 competencies. Interview questions are prepopulated with approximately 25,000 questions that recruiters, supervisors and interviewers can utilize. These questions assist individuals in assessing the degree of competency of individual candidates and employees. Much of this new intellectual property comes to Vurv via their acquisition of InScope in January 2006.

The new succession planning module has side-by-side comparisons of key employees. Relevant competency strengths and gaps are highlighted as well as differences in education and other relevant attributes. Specific plans regarding these individuals can be generated and incorporated into that person’s training program or future staffing/role assignments. Whereas some talent management tools provide career development planning as part of a training module, Vurv makes it part of its succession planning functionality. This is a better placement for this functionality.”

Where Professional Services Automation/Project Portfolio Management Solutions Must Go

We recently developed a 10 page report on the future of the PSA/PPM space. This report is available at no charge for a limited time to those who send a valid business email to: contact@vitalanalysis.com or submit a request using our request form page.

 The document overview states:

“A new generation of professional services automation (PSA) and project portfolio management (PPM) customers are entering the software buying market. While these new customers may be enthralled with current offerings in these respective spaces, existing buyers want more. The question for PSA/PPM vendors is “Where should these products extend their functionality?”

Talent issues may become a major innovation focus for PSA and PPM vendors. Innovation in the PSA/PPM space must continue and addressing these issues may be a good direction for these people-intensive sectors to pursue.

In this report, we examine the upcoming collision between PSA/PPM vendors and software firms in other sectors. We also look at the increasing difficulties in acquiring and retaining quality service workers and the technologies needed to support same.”
